About Bluestone Wildlife Management Area

Bluestone Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses over 18,000 acres along the Bluestone River in Summers County, West Virginia. The area features rugged mountainous terrain with steep slopes, mixed hardwood forests, and riverine ecosystems. Its geography includes the prominent Bluestone Gorge and adjoining ridges, creating a rich environment for native wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and a variety of migratory birds. Historically, this region supported Appalachian coal mining and railroads, but conservation efforts have restored much of the natural habitat. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a range of activities including hiking, fishing, hunting, birdwatching, and boating on the Bluestone River. The WMA is also adjacent to Bluestone State Park and the Bluestone National Scenic River, increasing its recreational appeal. A key feature is the Bluestone River itself, known for its trout fishery and scenic canyon views. The area's mix of forested ridges and water access make it valuable for both wildlife conservation and public enjoyment. Visitor appeal is enhanced by relatively remote settings offering solitude, diverse trails for all skill levels, and good opportunities for observation of native wildlife and plants unique to the Appalachian Plateau region.
